It’s a hot, tiring job, but the making of copra is one of the few ways Marshallese on the outer islands can make money. There are many steps in taking a coconut from a tree and turning it into sellable products, and one of the most important is undertaken by the Tobolar Copra Processing Authority at its plant in Majuro.
Its main product is crude coconut oil and ‘press cake’ (the solid remains after pressing out the liquid). These are marketed through brokerage and are exported to various international buyers.
In recent times Tobolar has expanded its products to include bar soap, ‘beauty’ oil, and cooking oil.
