Diving

Despite the fact that Majuro is the country’s largest population center, with about 35,000 residents, the waters are remarkably clear and rich in sea life (especially on the ocean sides and at the main pass, Kalalin).

If you are a certified diver/s you can charter the 25-foot sports boat Wasabi with Captain Cary Evarts (yachtseal at hotmail.com or 692-455-3044). Wasabi can take you anywhere in and around Majuro or over to nearby Arno Atoll.

There are limited sources for equipment, so bringing your own regulator, mask and fins, for example, is best. For diving outside of Majuro, the best option is to contact Australian Martin Daly, owner of the Indies Trader fleet of boats. He has a number of boats of varying sizes to take people out diving anywhere in the Marshall Islands, including Bikini Atoll. His representative on islands works in an office above the RRE Shoreline cafe and fuel dock.

Note that divers need to pay for a permit from the Historic Preservation Office, which is in the Ministry of Culture and Internal Affairs in Uliga. You can fax them on (692) 625-4476. They have a website at rmihpo.com, but at the time of writing (March, 2018), it was down.

Their site notes that “signatures must be acquired and payments made in person at the Historic Preservation Office in the Ministry of Internal Affairs.” The permit form is below. Right on the pdf and you can save and then print the document.
